US Coast Guard’s New Map Forgets a Big Piece of Michigan: The Entire Upper Peninsula
The United States Coast Guard, we are fairly certain, are still patrolling the waters of Michigan's Lake Superior coast off shore of the Upper Peninsula. But according to a newly release Coast Guard map, there may be some doubt.
Here's what happened.

From Numbers to Regions: Understanding the Coast Guard's Restructuring
The US Coast Guard has renamed its operating units from bland numbers (District 9 or District 11) to better geographic descriptions. So it's the Great Lakes region around Michigan or the Arctic region around Alaska.
The trouble is, when the USCG shared this news release on July 3 and included a map of the new regions there was something glaringly missing. Can you spot it?
If you noticed that the Coast Guard has given Wisconsin some new waterfront property and clipped away the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, you're right.
It's bureaucratic oversight without a doubt. But the slight didn't go unnoticed across the insulted peninsula.

In fact, it's a rather common occurrence. So much so, that there's a subreddit on Reddit dedicated to maps produced without the Upper Peninsula. It, perhaps, stings a bit more when it's your own government that's forgotten about you.

The oversight feels just a bit like the famous New York Daily News headline from the fall of 1975: "Ford to City: Drop Dead" after that administration refused a federal grant to assist NYC with a financial crisis.
So, USCG to UP: Drop Dead?
Perhaps. But don't tell that to the Coasties who are patrolling Lake Superior from 4 stations across the UP: St. Ignace and Sault Ste Marie in the east, Marquette in the central UP, and Portage/Dollar Bay in the Keweenaw Peninsula.

It's actually not the only geographic oversight the map makers made. Long Island is also missing off the shore of New York State.
