Drake’s Shout-Out to Kevin Durant Costs Toronto Raptors $25,000 NBA Fine [Video]
When Drake was appointed an official global ambassador for the Toronto Raptors last year, the team figured it would generate goodwill and money for the NBA franchise with plans for a clothing line as part of the deal.
However, now it looks like the arrangement will cost the team money.
A recent comment which Drake directed to Kevin Durant, the Oklahoma City Thunder player who is reigning NBA MVP, at Drake's OVO Fest in Toronto last week will cost the franchise $25,000 in fines, ESPN reports.
During the show, Drake gave Durant a shout-out from the stage, saying, "You know, my brother Kevin Durant was kind enough to come to the show tonight and watch us. I just want him to see what would happen if he came to play in Toronto. Let him know what would happen."
Unfortunately, because Durant will become a free agent in 2016 and because Drake is now an official team representative, the league has decided that Drake's comments violated the NBA's anti-tampering rules.
ESPN cites a source as saying the league regards Drake's comments as a public recruiting pitch to a player under contract to another team, resulting in the fine.
