The back-and-forth surrounding the future of downtown Grand Rapids retail shop The 12th House has officially reached its final chapter. Last fall, owner Sarah Cash announced the shop would close its Jefferson Avenue doors in late December, only to reverse course weeks later after community support inspired a plan to keep going.

A Final Decision After Last Year's Pause

Now, Cash has confirmed in a social media video that the physical storefront will officially shut down by the end of the year. This time around, the decision is final.

Five Years as a Downtown Grand Rapids LGBTQ Hub

Located at 8 Jefferson Ave. SE, the LGBTQ-owned business has spent the past five years operating as a safe and inclusive hub in downtown Grand Rapids.

The cozy shop is known for its mix of handmade goods, local art, clothing, jewelry, crystals, and incense, along with spiritual offerings like tarot, astrology, and palm readings.

Health Challenges and Economic Pressures Lead to Closure

Cash says the decision to close The 12th House comes after ongoing health issues that led to a hospital stay for most of August and early September, combined with economic challenges.

While Cash briefly considered selling the shop, she decided against that, expressing a personal need to bring this specific chapter to a full close. However, she noted in her update that if economic conditions improve down the road, a physical return is not entirely out of the question.

What's Next: Pop-Ups, Tarot, and Online Shopping

The good news? The 12th House isn't vanishing completely. Cash is keeping the business name and plans to host spring and summer pop-ups and art shows, as well as continue offering tarot readings.

The shop’s website will also stay up and running, with a full inventory update on the way so you can keep supporting the business online. In the meantime, locals are encouraged to pop into the storefront over the next few months to shop, grab a reading, and say a proper goodbye before the doors close for good.
