Books & Mortar Save By New Owners and Reopening In Grand Rapids

Just a few weeks ago, Grand Rapids book lovers were preparing to say goodbye to an East Hills staple.

It seemed like Books & Mortar would be shutting its doors for good... but then we got the amazing news that the store was saved by local buyers.

Now, we finally know who is taking over and when the grand reopening is happening!

Behind the Closure

In mid-July, owner Jenny Kinne announced that the "fiercely independent" bookstore known for its advocacy and community focus would close after a decade in business.

Kinne took over Books & Mortar in 2018 from founders Jonathan Shotwell and Christopher Roe. Over time, balancing a second full-time job, raising her daughter, and taking on personal debt to pay her staff became unsustainable. After a six-month search for a buyer turned up empty, Kinne set August 1 as the store's final day.

That appeared to be the end of the line for the beloved fixture at 966 Cherry St SE. Until the neighborhood stepped in.

Saved by Grand Rapids

The closure news triggered an outpouring of support across Grand Rapids, catching the attention of local buyers who rushed to save the business. Kinne confirmed on social media that a community-led plan was underway to purchase Books & Mortar and reopen the store.

In the wake of our closure announcement, some amazing members of the community expressed interest in purchasing Books & Mortar and reopening its doors on Cherry Street this Summer/early Fall. We won’t be able to share full details until August, but please hang tight. Something beautiful is coming.

Now we officially know who is taking over.

Who are the New Owners of Books & Mortar in Grand Rapids?

A trio of locals, Julie, Christine, and Will, have stepped up as the new owners to keep the Cherry Street staple alive!

The three bought the shop because they love what it means to the community, calling it a dream come true to help protect a place where diverse voices, new ideas, and neighbors can come together.

With the new ownership locked in, Books & Mortar is preparing to officially reopen its doors to the community this September.

While exact opening dates and hours will be shared soon, the new owners confirmed they will be running the shop themselves to ensure long-term financial sustainability while keeping the store's progressive, community-first spirit going strong.
