Portage PD Rescues Scared Cat From Highway Median
A friend of mine is a firefighter, and one time over dinner I asked him the one question everyone always asks him: "Have you ever actually rescued a cat from a tree?" I mean, come on; it happens in nearly every cartoon at some point, so I just needed to know it. His answer: rarely, but it has happened.

But a far more realistic and harrowing rescue took place yesterday in Portage after an adorable cat was spotted stranded on the median. Footage from the rescue shows the cat absolutely terrified, but thanks to the Department of Public Safety, it was successfully rescued.

According to a post on its Facebook page, the first call of the shift for Engine 1212 was a peculiar one. Rather than being stranded in a tree, a small tortoiseshell cat was reportedly stuck sitting on the thin median wall on I-94 near Portage Road. When the firetruck arrived on scene, the cat was still on the wall.

How the cat got itself into that situation is a mystery, but with its arched back, lowered head, and wide eyes, this cat was scared. Thankfully, it didn't react with hostility when the firefighter picked up the feline and placed it safely inside the truck. You can view a video of the rescue here.

After the rescue, it was brought to the Kalamazoo County Animal Control, where it is being cared for. A huge shoutout to the Portage Department of Public Safety and Kalamazoo County Animal Control for their work.
