Back on October 15, Michigan State Police troopers from the Houghton Lake Post got a call about a young red-tailed hawk in trouble in a Grayling parking lot. They did not know it at the time, but the poor bird had a severe concussion and a ruptured air sac—definitely not something it could bounce back from on its own.

Troopers carefully trapped the hawk using a blanket and a hard plastic carrier then whisked it off to the experts.

That’s where the amazing folks at the Association to Rescue Kritters (A.R.K.) in Roscommon took over. For the past month, the hawk has been in good hands, getting the medical care, rest, and rehab it needed to get strong again. Staff and volunteers closely monitored the hawk, ensuring it was ready to return to the wild once fully healed.

Yesterday, it all came full circle. The same troopers who rescued him were there to release the now-healthy hawk back into the wild.

It’s a reminder of what law enforcement and wildlife rehab groups do to help animals when they need it most. Michigan’s fall can be a tough time for wildlife, but thanks to quick action and proper care, this young hawk got a second chance.
