Rosa Parks Circle Summer Events: New Grand Rapids Lineup

There is nothing quite like downtown Grand Rapids in the summer, and Rosa Parks Circle is usually right at the center of it. From fun festivals to beloved swing dancing nights and yummy food trucks, it’s always good for making memories.

The City of Grand Rapids just dropped a brand-new summer lineup. They say the expanded schedule directly reflects the community’s desire for more inclusive, active, and family-friendly programming downtown.

The City is introducing events that I’m pretty sure we have never seen in the heart of downtown before—like outdoor roller skating and a sober game night!

Plus, most are totally free!

You Can Now Roller Skate at Rosa Parks Circle

One of the biggest eye-catchers on the new schedule to me is the Summer Sk8 Series. Wednesdays starting July 22, the plaza transforms into an open-air roller rink. From 6 to 8 p.m., skaters of all ages and skill levels can take over Rosa Parks Circle.

Now, unlike ice skating during the winter, it does not sound like roller skates will be available to rent, so you'll need to bring your own.

Grab a Board for Sober Social Game Night

And if you’re looking for a great weekend vibe that doesn't involve a bar crawl, they are launching Circle Up: Sober Social Game Night. Hosted by Michigan Sober Social, this alcohol-free community game night is taking over Friday nights starting in late July from 6 to 9 p.m.

It sounds like a fantastic, welcoming space to connect, hang out, and play some games under the evening sky (plus, they have a massive all-day blowout scheduled for Saturday, August 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Get There Early For the Ice Guru Silent Disco

Thursday nights are getting a high-energy upgrade under the downtown lights with the Ice Guru Silent Disco series, starting at 6 p.m. But here is a major insider tip if you want to dance your heart out: the first 25 headsets are completely free to use! After those are snagged, it is $10 per person. Just make sure you bring a state ID or something comparable to use as collateral to get your headphones.

More Fitness and Dance Opportunities Coming to Rosa Parks Circle

Plus, you can get moving for free on other days of the week, too. Here is a quick look at the weekly lineup:

Sunday Soul Line Dancing: Learn soul line dances to R&B, soul, jazz, house, rap, and gospel music. Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. starting July 5.
Monday Zumba: Sweat it out with a high-energy workout at 6:30 p.m. as part of the City’s Free Outdoor Fitness series.
Baila at Rosa Latin Dance Series: Check out a vibrant celebration of culture, music, and movement for families and dancers of all levels. Saturdays starting July 18 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Keep an eye out, as some dates may rotate between Fridays and Saturdays!)

What Else Goes on at Rosa Parks Circle in the Summer?

Of course, we can't talk about summer at Rosa Parks Circle without celebrating the established staples that keep downtown buzzing:

Tuesday Night Swing runs every Tuesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m., featuring free dance lessons under the stars.

Then, a great lunchtime excuse to leave the office: Downtown Grand Rapids Inc.’s Relax at Rosa series. Every Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m., you'll find a rotation of live music alongside a lineup of local food trucks.
