Sonar Surprise: Full Truck Found Underwater
From using a cane pole with a hook and worm to sonar technology, fishing has come a long way. That new technology helped one angler locate a stolen truck at the bottom of Wolf Lake.
Sonar Technology Has Revolutionized Fishing
Back in the day, fishermen relied solely on cane poles before modern rods and reels came along. They also tended to dress much more formally than today’s anglers, who usually opt for more casual gear.
Fishing saw a major shift for local anglers in the late 1950s when portable sonar technology, originally developed for military use, was adapted for commercial and recreational anglers, helping locate fish and map underwater terrain more effectively.
Fish Finder Picks Up Unexpected Sunken Truck
According to the Van Buren County Michigan sheriffs Office's Post Facebook page, an angler on Wolf Lake used his Garmin LiveScope sonar system to locate a stolen truck. He contacted the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office and shared images of the Dodge Ram, which was sitting about 25 feet underwater.
The Van Buren County Dive Team were called in to locate and mark the sunken truck that was reported stolen out of Kalamazoo County in October 2025.
Once divers secured a cable to the submerged Dodge Ram, a tow truck was able to pull it from the water. Many fish had made the truck their home, so after it was brought ashore, the recovery team quickly released a pile of fish that had been hiding inside.

The investigation remains ongoing.
