Move-in week at the University of Michigan is supposed to be an exciting time for students settling into a new school year. But for some students living near campus, the experience has been overshadowed by safety concerns.

In recent weeks, Ann Arbor Police have received multiple reports of a prowler peering into the windows of off-campus housing.

The incidents have spanned several areas near the university, including the 500 block of East Kingsley Street, the 1100 block of White Street, the 900 block of Dewey Avenue, and the 200 block of Thayer Street.

According to police, the suspect has been spotted looking into residences of college-aged women.

And it’s not just women on ground level that have to worry, they have been reports of the person trying to film through second-floor windows. Understandably, the reports have left many students on edge.

While these incidents are not the university’s fault, the string of reports raises a difficult question: Does the University of Michigan have a peeping tom problem?

The school itself hasn’t issued a statement, but with Ann Arbor being such a large college town, concerns about student safety are front and center.

Ann Arbor Police are urging anyone who notices suspicious activity to speak up. Reports can be made by calling 734-794-6920 or emailing tips@a2gov.org. Anonymous tips are also accepted through the Silent Witness program.

For now, students are encouraged to stay alert, keep blinds closed at night, and report anything unusual. Awareness may be the first step in making sure the problem doesn’t grow.
