Already Voted Absentee? Here’s How to Change Your Vote in Grand Rapids

Michigan is gearing up for the August 4 primary election, and many across the area have already cast their votes via absentee ballot. In most cases, folks have already made up their mind as to who they're voting for. But sometimes things change, or a candidate drops out last minute (like U.S. Senate candidate Mallory McMorrow).

But if you voted absentee and now want to make a change, can you? It turns out you can, and the process is relatively simple.

How to Change Your Vote in Kent County, Michigan

The City of Grand Rapids' official website lays it out pretty well in its FAQs (note: this applies specifically to City of Grand Rapids residents, so it may be different in the city, township, or village where you are registered to vote).

If you've already voted absentee but would like to change your vote either because you believe you made an error or you just changed your mind (or your candidate dropped out), just follow these steps.

• Request a replacement ballot. This must be done in writing (with a signature) to the City Clerk's Office. The deadline for this is the Friday prior to the election at 5 p.m. (In this case, that's Friday, July 31, 2026.) Requests can be dropped off in person, emailed to elections@grcity.us, or faxed to (616) 456-4607.
• Once your request has been received, the City Clerk will void the ballot that you have already submitted and issue you a new one.
• Either mail in or drop off the new ballot to the City Clerk's office by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
