The DNR announced this week that it will be holding surplus land auctions this August and September. The auction will feature over 120 parcels of land. And it's not just random wooded areas.

According to a release from the DNR, the auction will have some of that coveted wooded land, but will also have parcels with river frontage, and lake frontage.

How The Michigan DNR Chooses Land for Its Surplus Auction

The DNR didn't pick these parcels all willy-nilly. There is a rigorous review process that the DNR uses to find "parcels that don’t fit the department mission to balance conservation, recreation and economic development," according to Scott Whitcomb with the DNR.

Dates For the Michigan DNR Surplus Land Auction

All of the parcels that are available don't go up for auction at the same time. There are eleven different auctions scheduled to take place between August 1 and September 5. Here's a look at the schedule breakdown by county.

  • Kent and Oceana - Friday, August 1
  • Grand Traverse, Lake, Manistee, and Wexford - Monday, August 4
  • Lapeer County - Thursday, August 7
  • Alger, Luce, and Schoolcraft - Monday, August 18
  • Gogebic and Marquette - Tuesday, August 19
  • Washtenaw - Thursday, August 21
  • Mecosta, Midland, and Newaygo - Friday, August 22
  • Barry - Tuesday, August 26
  • Allegan - Wednesday, August 27
  • Ogemaw, Missaukee, and Montmorency - Thursday, August 8
  • Genesee - Friday, September 5

The DNR says that the "interactive" bidding on these parcels will begin at 10 a.m. EST on the day of the auction.

How to Register for the Michigan DNR Surplus Land Auction

If you think you might be interested in some of the parcels up for grabs, keep in mind that you'll want to preregister. In fact, if there is a property that you have your eye on, you must be registered prior to the auction date.
