Michigan Salmonella Alert: 21 Cases Linked to Backyard Poultry and Baby Birds
Baby birds are cute, but the state of Michigan is urging you not to touch them after nearly two dozen cases of Salmonella have been linked back to people touching baby birds.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says that there have been three large multistate outbreaks of Salmonella infections.
Those in Michigan (and other states) who have contracted Salmonella have been traced to contact with "backyard poultry," more specifically baby ducks and chickens.

Anyone who spends time around chicken coops, cages, or anywhere baby ducks and chickens generally roam is told to pay attention. The baby birds carry Salmonella germs on their feathers, beaks, feet, and in the places where they live.
Before and after coming into contact with baby ducks and chickens, MDHHS says you should be sure to wash your hands thoroughly.
Currently, 21 cases of Salmonella tied to these types of cases have been identified in Michigan. Of those, roughly six of the cases are in children. Though these are the reported cases, the CDC said in a statement that the actual number is likely much higher.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has suggested the following precautions for those who have baby ducks and chickens.
- Kids under the age of 5 and the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems, should not handle them.
- When cleaning equipment associated with the care of the animals, remain outside.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the animals or anything associated with them.
- Keep the animals away from where food is prepared, served, or stored.
Here are some things that MDHHS says you absolutely should not do.
- Do not kiss or snuggle the animals. (Really? But they're so cute!)
- Do not keep the animals inside a house, or where people live, eat, or sleep.
- Do not give live baby ducks or chicks as gifts to children.
