How the Michigan State Police's Blue Goose Relay to Ann Arbor Began

It all started with a conversation with a grandmother at one of MSP's "Shop With a Cop" events, which was put on by officers from the MSP's Wakefield post.

For those unfamiliar, Wakefield is a town at the far west end of the Upper Peninsula, roughly twelve miles from the Wisconsin border.

The grandmother told officers that her two-year-old granddaughter, Vialah, was currently at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, undergoing treatment for neuroblastoma. Obviously, that means that little Vialah's Christmas would look a lot different this year.

Hearing this, officers from the Wakefield post made a decision - they wanted to make Christmas as magical as they could for Vialah and her family. Unfortunately, Ann Arbor is about a nine-hour drive from Wakefield, and the officers couldn't just abandon their post to spread Christmas cheer.

So, they called in some favors from their friends across the state. And that's how the Blue Goose relay began...

Troopers from the Wakefield post travelled to St. Ignace, where they handed off their haul of holiday cheer to officers from the St. Ignace post. From there, the gifts travelled and moved from car to car from St. Ignace and down through Flint before reaching their final destination in Ann Arbor.

Once they arrived at the hospital, troopers were able to deliver Christmas cheer to Vialah and her family.
