California Woman Rescued After YouTube Contest Gone Wrong in Michigan
Only in Michigan can a YouTube reality show turn into a real-life survival story.
A 36-year-old woman from California found this out the hard way recently when she got lost in the Pigeon River Forest during an outdoor survival contest. What was supposed to be a part of the game quickly turned incredibly serious after she wandered off in search of water, only to not return.
According to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, the contestant was missing for almost 18 hours in cold, rainy weather before first responders and a Michigan State Police helicopter helped bring her safely back to camp.
She was found in a swampy area, wet and exhausted but able to walk out under her own power. What could have been a much worse situation was all fine thanks to responders in the area that are used to our wilderness, unlike this nice woman. EMS evaluated her on scene, and thankfully, she had no serious injuries.
Now, don’t get me wrong: being lost in the woods is scary for anyone. But we Michiganders are just built a little different in order to survive all four seasons in the mitten.
We grow up with muddy spring hikes, mosquito-filled summers, and winters that will freeze your eyelashes completely shut.
To us heading into the Forest isn’t just terrifying reality tv wilderness; it’s a playground, a classroom, and a test of grit. For a Californian used to palm trees and sunshine, Michigan’s woods can feel downright unforgiving.
At the end of the day, it was the dedication of local first responders (and some good old Michigan toughness) that got her home safe.
And maybe next time, YouTube survival shows will think twice before underestimating just how wild and pure our backyard really is.
