A Detroit Pistons Fan Programmed NBA Jam and Snuck in the Ultimate Piece of Petty Code
If you grew up in the 90s like me, you definitely spent a ton of money at the local arcade or stayed up way too late playing NBA Jam on your Sega or Super Nintendo.

You remember the announcer screaming "HE'S ON FIRE!" and players leaping twenty feet in the air to shatter the backboard.
At the time, I was a huge Shawn Kemp and Seattle SuperSonics fan so I would always play with them as my main team, and all the other times I would be the Detroit Pistons.
So many times against my friends or playing against the game I would win or lose a game on a last second buzzer beater.
When I played as the Detroit Pistons, one team that never seemed to make a buzzer beater against me was the Chicago Bulls.
It turns out it wasn't happening when I played. The game was actually rigged!

The lead developer of NBA Jam was a guy named Mark Turmell, and he grew up right here in Michigan as a massive Detroit Pistons fan.
He absolutely hated the Bulls.
During the early 90s, the Pistons-Bulls rivalry was as heated as it gets, and Mark just couldn't stand seeing Chicago win.
So he snuck in a secret piece of code deep into the game's programming.
Whenever the Bulls played the Pistons, the game would automatically tweak the code in the final seconds.
If the Bulls took a shot right at the buzzer to win or tie the game against Detroit, the code forced the ball to brick off the rim.
I love that he did this and now is sharing it with everyone.
I'm glad I'm not a Bulls fan or I might have broken a few controllers.
NBA Jam had a hidden code that made the Chicago Bulls miss last-second shots against the Detroit Pistons. The creator was a Pistons fan.
