Nick Cave’s First Sculpture in Michigan Coming To Frederik Meijer Gardens
There’s nothing I love more than a stroll through the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. No matter the season, the gardens are always evolving and adding new features.
They just announced that their newest statue is meaningful, powerful, and the first of its kind in Michigan.
Standing nearly 26 feet tall, Nick Cave’s Amalgam (Origin) is now part of Meijer Gardens’ permanent collection.
If the name Nick Cave rings a bell, it’s probably because of his famous Soundsuits. They are elaborate, wearable sculptures that combine fashion, craft, and performance art.
He created the first Soundsuit back in 1992 in response to the Rodney King beating, designing them as protective “armor” that concealed race, gender, and class. Over the years, they’ve become iconic symbols of empowerment and individuality.
Now, Cave has scaled that concept up. Amalgam (Origin) takes the spirit of the Soundsuits and transforms it into a monumental bronze sculpture of a human form intertwined with branches, flowers, and birds.
It’s big, bold, and beautiful and the result is equal parts striking and thought-provoking.
What makes it even more special is its placement. Located outdoors near the Japanese Garden and Michigan’s Farm Garden, the piece is meant to evolve with its surroundings.
Real birds can actually nest in its branches, blurring the line between art and nature. Cave himself describes it as a beacon of individuality and collective humanity, a reminder that while we’re all unique, we’re also rooted in the same natural world. And that we’re always changing with our environment, which can be a beautiful thing.
For Grand Rapids (and Michigan as a whole) this is a big deal. Not only is it Cave’s first permanent installation in the state, but it also deepens Meijer Gardens’ reputation as one of the most dynamic sculpture parks in the country.
It’s also a piece of art that will encourage you to visit to see it more than once. Because depending on the season, the light, and even the wildlife, it won’t ever look exactly the same twice.
So, if you needed another reason to plan a fall trip to Meijer Gardens, this is it.
