Michigan might not be famous for mullets. (After all, it’s a hairstyle that some folks call the “Kentucky Waterfall”)

One Muskegon boy is out to change that. He’s got the curls, the confidence, and the Detroit Lions pride to prove he’s got what it takes to put Michigan on the mullet map.

Eight-year-old Jett from Muskegon is taking part in the USA Mullet Championship, a nationwide contest celebrating the legendary “business in the front, party in the back” hairstyle.

While the competition is all about fun, it’s also raising money for Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors, a nonprofit that builds mortgage-free, fully accessible homes for veterans. Win-win, right?

Jett’s mullet journey started in the most Michigan way possible: over pizza and subs. In his contestant bio, he recalls being just five years old when he spotted his dad’s friend Tony sporting a glorious mullet at a Muskegon pizza shop.

Inspired, Jett declared he would one day grow out a style even better than Tony’s.

I mean, look at this mullet. It's GLORIOUS.

He’s been growing his mullet since 2022, and now, with his mom’s natural curls and his dad’s outgoing personality, he’s turning heads everywhere. “Everyone loves a kid with a mullet!” Jett said.

And with his Lions fandom, he’s even dreaming of cheering them on at the Super Bowl if he’s lucky enough to walk away with the championship prize.

Now, it’s up to Michigan to rally behind him. Voting is open at the USA Mullet Championship website, and Jett needs your support to move on to the next round. Good luck!
