The West Michigan Whitecaps are on a roll this season. (In case you missed it, this might just be one of their best seasons yet.) The team clinched a spot in the postseason before the halfway point of the year, a feat that has fans dreaming big for what’s ahead at LMCU Ballpark.

While the current roster is lighting up the field, the Whitecaps have been in the national spotlight before, just not in the way you might expect.

Remember Anchorman 2?

In the 2013 movie Anchorman 2, There’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in the film where sportscaster Champ Kind (played by David Koechner) is shouting “Whammy!” over baseball highlights.

If you squint and look closely at the graphic over his shoulder, you’ll find some familiar grey uniforms.

That’s not just random B-roll. Those are real-life West Michigan Whitecaps games, which is cool to see our own Grand Rapids-based minor league team make a cameo in one of the most beloved comedy sequels of the 2010s.

It’s the kind of quirky pop culture connection that makes following the Whitecaps even more fun (especially when they’re putting up wins like they have this season.)
