Does the Michigan Town of Hawkins Have a Connection with “Stranger Things”?
If you’re a fan of the show Stranger Things, you’re familiar with the town it’s supposed to take place in: Hawkins.
But in what state is the town of Hawkins? Some fans surmise it lies in southern Indiana. Others say it’s in Georgia, because a good portion of the show is shot there.
But has anyone ever pinpointed the sleepy village of Hawkins, Michigan?
Hawkins lies in Newaygo County’s Barton Township but there’s a good chance you won’t find it...it’s not listed on Google Maps. You can search for the intersection of N. Cottonwood Avenue and E. 17 Mile Road. Downtown Hawkins was once located there with a nice little handful of shops, all gone.

Hawkins began as a post office on November 13, 1889. The first postmaster was storekeeper George D. Hawkings, for whom the village was named after. Looking at old Atlases, it’s easy to see that Hawkins had a number of stores & shops, all of which are gone or replaced with a newer building or two.
When the post office closed on September 14, 1903, that was the downfall of Hawkins. Your best bet for any kind of entertainment in Hawkins is the ‘Last Chance’ saloon or maybe having a picnic at Hawkins Park.
Although the Hawkins in Stranger Things is a fictional town with a dark secret, one can imagine the events of the show happening in the old Michigan village of Hawkins. Driving through Hawkins, you can almost imagine the same dark secrets occurring as in the television version.
Are the residents of Hawkins, Michigan aware of any secret government experiments and their ‘supernatural threats’? You’ll have to visit and find out for yourself...
