Michigan Poker Champ’s Bizarre Kidnapping Claim Ends in Federal Prison
A Michigan poker champion who once claimed he was kidnapped and extorted by a cartel has now been sentenced to federal prison, bringing a bizarre, years-long saga to a stunning end.
George Janssen is a four-time World Series of Poker winner and prominent Bay City car dealer. The Bad Axe man was accused in 2023 of faking his own abduction in order to defraud friends and financial institutions out of roughly $3.2 million.
The Kidnapping Claim That Shocked Mid-Michigan
What began as a shocking alleged abduction has since been exposed by investigators as part of a scheme involving millions of dollars.
According to ABC-12, Janssen claimed that he had been abducted and held captive for 35 days in the Toledo area. He was later discovered along a rural Huron County road with his hands zip-tied together, marking the end of what he portrayed as a long ordeal.
Janssen told investigators his alleged captors were trying to extort a large sum of money, claiming they drove him from Toledo to Huron County to recover cash he said was hidden on his hunting property.
He was also accused of taking out millions of dollars in fraudulent vehicle loans through his Bay City car dealership, Bay Auto Brokers.
Poker Champion Sentenced in Federal Court
Now, the story has taken its final turn.
ABC-12 reports Janssen has been sentenced to three years in federal prison after pleading guilty to bank fraud. Prosecutors say the scheme involved falsified loan paperwork and millions of dollars in fraudulent financing, ultimately unraveling the kidnapping story that first grabbed headlines.
