New Pine Knob Sign Has Some Fans Excited and Others Upset
If you've driven past Pine Knob lately, you've probably noticed something new lighting up the entrance. And depending on who you ask, it's either a modern upgrade or a giant distraction.
A brand-new 32-foot digital sign recently went up outside Pine Knob Music Theater, and while venue operators say it's designed to help concertgoers with real-time event information and improve visibility, some longtime residents aren't exactly thrilled with the change.
Pine Knob's New Digital Sign Is Turning Heads
One resident who's been going to Pine Knob concerts since the 1970s told WXYZ-TV that the sign feels completely different from the venue's old-school character.

He remembers when employees actually had to go outside and manually change the letters and numbers on the sign. Sure, it wasn't flashy, but he says it was easier to read and fit the atmosphere of the area a lot better.
Residents Say The Sign Changes The Character Of The Area
The biggest concern seems to be the brightness and movement of the digital display. Some residents worry it could distract drivers, especially along the stretch of Sashabaw Road that has traditionally felt more rural and secluded.

Independence Township officials have also weighed in, saying the sign doesn't necessarily fit the community character outlined in the township's master plan.
Calls For A Compromise Instead Of Removal
What's interesting is that most critics aren't demanding the sign be removed. Instead, many are asking for a compromise, like shutting it off when there isn't a concert or event happening. The sign has already received zoning approval, so it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
