It may be a very common tool for you to use, Google Street View. The feature of Google Maps allows any user to see virtually any location. It can be useful when travelling in a location you're not familiar with and want to see what your destination looks like.

It can also be fun for virtual sight seeing.

But what about some locations you can't find on Street View?

The question came up on the Facebook Group Google Earth, Structures and Anomalies that noted the city of North Oaks, Minnesota is not available on Street View.

Interestingly enough, the city - a gated community - banned Street View from its streets and asked Google to remote any images.

In May 2008, NOHOA sent a letter to internet search company Google, stating that its Street View software contained images that violated their trespassing ordinance, and requested their removal. Google complied, so there is no street view available for the roads within North Oaks.

And that's the way it is today, a blank spot on a Street View map.

It got us wondering about any places in Michigan that are not covered by Street View. While it's common, and not altogether surprising that rural areas and back roads have never been passed by the Street View car, there are some very urban areas that lack coverage.

The Mound Corridor - Suburban Detroit

Take, for instance, the Mound Road corridor north of Detroit in the suburbs of Warren and Sterling Heights. There are vast tracts of land to the immediate east of Mound that are blank.

These are heavy manufacturing areas with both automotive plants and instillations of the defense industry.

Ogden Township, Michigan Missing in Google Street View

While it's not a surprise to not find expansive coverage of rural Michigan, the lack of Street View in southern Lenawee County does feel a bit odd.

South of Adrian and Blissfield and north of the Michigan/Ohio state line, the Street View cars have totally blanked on areas of Ogden Township leaving the region inexplicably without coverage.

While there are other examples of these large areas of the state not covered, this is notable for being very near largely populated and covered areas.

No Street View in the city of Lake Angelus

Perhaps similar to the example from Minnesota, there is almost no coverage of the city of Lake Angelus, the tony suburb hidden away in Oakland County. The roads that ring the city limits are covered but there is no Street Views of the small residential streets.

Where Street View Came Late to Michigan

Some of Michigan's smallest villages did not get Street View coverage until very recently. Harrietta, in Wexford County was only added to Street View in August of 2024. Same for the village of Fountain in Mason County.

Google Street View Coverage of Michigan Islands

When it comes to the state's islands, Mackinac Island is largely covered, with a great deal of irony since the island is famously carless. On neighboring Bois Blanc island there is no presence from Google, but a user has uploaded a Street View along Tower Road and North Shore Road. However the main settlement of Pointe Aux Pins is not covered.
