How To Leave Michigan By Water If You Needed to Suddenly Bugout
Say for whatever reason you feel the need to bug out. Maybe it's zombies that have taken the next town over. You gotta get away and the roads aren't safe.
Here's how you can escape Michigan by water should the need ever arise.
The question came up n the Geography subreddit of Reddit with the ask being:
Can someone do a rough mock up of the different routes you could take by boat from each of the Great Lakes through rivers to the oceans? Please I’m sure curious for bug-out/end of days knowledge.
There are just three ways out of the Great Lakes by water.
The Critical Great Lakes Exit Points
The first is the Lake Michigan route. This is via Chicago. None of the rivers that pour into Lake Michigan from the Michigan side connect to anything else. The closest you could get would be a portage from the St Joseph River to the rise of the Kankakee near South Bend.
The western/southern Great Lakes escape is via the Chicago river and canal system to the Des Plaines and Illinois Rivers to the Mississippi and out to the Gulf.

To the east there are two ways out.
The first is through New York State using the Erie Canal system to the Hudson River and out to open waters at New York City.
The final - and historic only natural geographic way - is via the St Lawrence River/Seaway. Lake Ontario funnels into the St Lawrence which winds and widens its way out to the North Atlantic.
So that's it. Looking to escape Michigan and the Great Lakes there are only three choices.
